About Information Design
Is information design a new concept?
No, in 1969, Emil Ruder, a famous Swiss typographer, spoke of the concept of information overload:
‘Today we are inundated with such an immense flood of printed matter that the value of the individual work has depreciated, for our harassed contemporaries simply cannot take everything that is printed today. It is the typographer’s task to divide up and organize and interpret this mass of printed matter in such a way that the reader will have a good chance of finding what is of interest to him.’
Ruder could be describing the need for, and function of, an information designer.
Why do we need information design today?
At every moment we constantly filter information.
Information Design is an approach to organising and presenting content to better capture and retain the attention of your audience so they are stimulated towards some form of action. That action may be to explore your website and bookmark it, download your free offerings, sign-up to a membership, or purchase a service or product.
The cornerstones of information design are the optimising of:
• Layout of information elements - visual/textual
• Content quality - less is more
• Context and audience - relevance
• Structure of detail - broad to specific
• Navigation and organisation - page flow, site map
This flickr home page shows their information design takes into account what their audience wants to do when they come to their site. They make it easy for them with their action- oriented headings.
If you know your audience type you can style your website and deliver information to your audience in formats they recognise and prefer.
